Sound file formats
Uncompressed: eg wav, aiff, au, smp, voc.
Lossy compression: eg mp3, ra, and vox.


wav - A format for storing uncompressed audio files.

aiff - It is a file that is used for storing sound data for a personal computer or device like a phone.
au - The AU file is a simple audio file that was introduced by Sun Micro systems.
smp - Color palette file created by IDRISI Taiga, an application used for GIS imaging; stores color information for a raster image stored in a .RST file; acts as a legend for the colors displayed when the image is visualized. Programs that open SMP files.
voc - The first 19 bytes in this format is "Creative Voice File". There is another audio fileformat with the .voc file extension, which is RCA-VOC. RCA-VOC format is used by RCA Digital Voice Recorder, and is totally different from Creative Labs VOCformat.


mp3 - MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3) is a standard technology and format for compressing a sound sequence into a very small file (about one-twelfth the size of the originalfile) while preserving the original level of sound quality when it is played. MP3provides near CD quality audio.
ra - Real Audio is a common format for playing audio clips within a Web browser.
vox - Dialogic ADPCM or VOX is an audio file format, optimized for storing digitized voice data at a low sampling rate. VOX files are most commonly found in telephony applications, as well as an occasional arcade redemption game.
