Artistic Styles
Pixel Art
Pixel Art is a type of art that is done
digitally and it is made pixel by pixel. It is mostly used in 8-bit 9or 16-bit
games, Pixel art is also considered to be called spriting. Spriting is creating characters, modifying characters and
making objects using Pixel Art however it is for a video game.
Here are some
examples of Pixel Art:
There are many 8-bit games that have Pixel
art as the artistic style such as Mario. Here is a video explaining the process
of making Pixel Art:
Different games can set different moods for
people, 8-bit games tend to make people think about the early days of video
games when technology was not as advanced. Modern day games are mostly 3D and
not 8-bit. These games tend to create a lot more moods and emotions for the
people who play them because they can have a visual image that is easier to
relate to real life.
Photorealism
Technology today is slowly getting better
and better. Photorealism is a perfect example of how technology and digital art
is getting better. Photorealism is a digital picture that is made to look as
real as possible this is done by the creator making every line and thing look
as detailed as possible to try and make it look as real as it can get.
Photorealism can be used in games as well, however these games usually take a
long time to make due to them making everything as detailed as it can be. A
good example is a game called ‘The Last of Us’ this game took a long time to
make and it is a very detailed game that really sets a good mood and emotion
for the viewer.
Here are some photo examples of
Photorealism:
Photorealism sets a really good mood if it
is used in games, this is because it looks very realistic so they can immerse
into the game making them very into the game and want to see more. Once again
‘The Last of Us’ is a good example because it is about a zombie outbreak that
broke out and the photorealism graphics get certain people more interested in
the game and that is why people are looking forward to ‘The Last of Us 2’.
This is a video of the last of us and how
good and realistic is looks even though it is a fairly old game:
Here is ‘The Last of Us 2’ brand new
trailer and it looks better than the 1st one:
Cell Shading
Cell Shading is designed to make 3-D
computer graphics look flat. A lot of games use cell shading because it makes
things look a lot less 3-D and some people do enjoy playing games that look
more 2-D then 3-D.
This image here is a good example of what
Cell Shading does:
Cell shading can set different moods to the
player and it can change the game from a realistic 3D perspective to a 2D perspective
due to the shading.
Here is a video of some games that have been
cell shaded to make them look amazing, some of the games you might of heard of:
Exaggeration
When making art for games it can sometimes
be over exaggerated to make the player more interested and intrigued. Company’s
mainly do it to remind the player that it is not real and that their game is
unique with all this over exaggerated stuff. Most anime is over exaggerated
with vibrant colors and settings.
Here is a photo of an over exaggerated
game:
In that image you can clearly see that the
players clothing are very vibrant and attracts the human eye, but the main
thing is that when the person on the left has punched the person on the right
there is that spark that is very bright. This interests the players and it
reminds them that it is a game because in real life when you punch someone
massive sparks would NOT appear to create the effect.
This is another good example of how
exaggeration is used in digital art, the characters hair is standing up
perfectly and not realistically. Using the concept art of exaggeration creates
a mood for the player playing the game that it is a fantasy and is made to make
people very interested in it.
Anime
Anime is a different Artistic Style to the others
this is because it is meant to keep a cartoon look instead of having it look realistic.
Most things in anime can look exaggerated as well, for example it has lots of bright
colours to attract the viewer’s eyes and facial expressions of characters can be
very over the top to get a clear message to the player.
Here is some example of anime:
This is an image showing the over the top facial
expressions and how it does not look realistic at all more like a cartoon.
In this image everything is exaggerated and
there are a lot of bright colors that catch the viewer’s eyes such as the fire at
the bottom of the image.
Because Anime is very much like a cartoon it
sets a mood for the players that it is not very realistic and by watching or playing
an anime game they can tell that it is almost like a cartoon.
